Manchester United falls to Brighton 1-0 in Premier League opener
Red Devils start season with defeat, Ronaldo ends goal drought
Brighton and Hove Albion started their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday, August 7th. Pascal Gross scored the only goal of the game in the 55th minute, capitalizing on a mistake by United goalkeeper David de Gea.
The defeat is a major setback for United, who are looking to improve on their sixth-place finish from last season. It is also the first time they have lost to Brighton in the Premier League, having won both previous meetings.
United had the better chances in the first half, but they were unable to find the back of the net. Cristiano Ronaldo, who was making his first Premier League start since returning to the club, had a number of opportunities, but he was unable to convert any of them.
Brighton grew into the game in the second half, and they took the lead through Gross. The German midfielder pounced on a loose ball after De Gea had parried a shot from Neal Maupay.
United pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages, but they were unable to break down a resolute Brighton defense. The result leaves United in 19th place in the Premier League table, while Brighton are up to third.
In other Premier League action on Sunday, Arsenal beat Crystal Palace 2-0, Chelsea beat Everton 1-0, and Tottenham Hotspur beat Southampton 4-1.
