1er Mai Muguet Tradition

The History of Lily of the Valley on May 1st

A Long-Standing Tradition with Political Roots

During the French Revolution, lily of the valley was not associated with May 1st but rather with the republican day of 7 Floréal (April 26th) in the calendar created by Fabre d'Églantine. The story of how this flower became connected to May 1st is intimately intertwined with politics.

Marshal Pétain's Role

In 1941, Marshal Pétain officially established the Fête du Travail et de la Concorde (Labor and Concord Day) on May 1st. As part of this celebration, it became customary to give lily of the valley to loved ones. This tradition, which has its roots in antiquity, was subsequently perpetuated by the Nazis during their occupation of France.
