Synopsis
A Bill of Divorcement is a 1932 American drama film directed by George Cukor and starring John Barrymore, Katharine Hepburn, Paul Lukas, and Billie Burke. The film is based on the 1921 play of the same name by Clemence Dane. The film tells the story of Hilary Fairfield (Barrymore), a man who is released from an asylum after fifteen years and returns home to find that his wife has divorced him and his daughter (Hepburn) is engaged to another man. Hilary is determined to win back his daughter's love and prove his sanity, but he faces many challenges along the way.
Reception
A Bill of Divorcement was a critical and commercial success. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Barrymore), Best Actress (Hepburn), and Best Adapted Screenplay. Hepburn won the award for Best Actress.
