A Look Back at the Life of Vice President Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris was born in Oakland, California, on October 20, 1964. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a Tamil Indian biologist whose work on breast cancer research earned her international recognition. Her father, Donald Harris, was a Jamaican economist who taught at Stanford University.

Harris's parents divorced when she was young, and she was raised by her mother and stepfather, Howard Harris, a law professor at Stanford. She attended Howard University, where she studied political science and economics. After graduating, she worked as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney's office and later as the San Francisco District Attorney.

In 2010, Harris was elected Attorney General of California, becoming the first woman and the first African American to hold the position. She served two terms as Attorney General, during which time she focused on criminal justice reform, environmental protection, and consumer protection.

In 2020, Harris was elected Vice President of the United States, becoming the first woman, the first African American, and the first Asian American to hold the position.
