Kamala Devi Harris was born in Oakland, California, on October 20, 1964. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a Tamil Indian biologist whose work on breast cancer research earned her international recognition. Her father, Donald Harris, was a Jamaican economist who taught at Stanford University.

Harris's parents divorced when she was young, and she was raised by her mother and stepfather, Howard Harris, a law professor at Stanford. She attended Howard University, where she studied political science and economics.
